Just licensed in Illinois? Your first steps as a new broker

Congratulations on passing. Here is what Illinois expects from you next, checked against the state's own rules.

In Illinois your entry-level license is called a broker license, issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), Division of Real Estate. These are the deadlines and rules that matter in your first months.

Your first steps in Illinois

1

Get active under a broker

Illinois has no salesperson license: new licensees are brokers. You need a sponsoring broker registered with IDFPR to be active; if sponsorship ends, your license becomes inactive automatically.

2

Put your post-licensing deadline in your calendar today

45 hours of post-license education (three 15-hour courses, each with an exam), due before your first renewal. If you miss it, IDFPR says licensees who do not complete their renewal requirements cannot practice after the renewal deadline.

3

Plan your first renewal

Broker licenses renew on April 30 of even years. If you were licensed on or after November 1, 2025, your license expires April 30, 2028, and all 45 post-license hours are due by then. Later renewals need 12 hours of continuing education.

4

Sort out insurance, MLS and association membership

E&O insurance: Not required by the state rules we checked. Many brokerages require it or include it in their fees, so ask yours before you sign. Joining the local Realtor association and MLS is usually through your brokerage and comes with its own fees, so budget for them before your first deal.

5

Set up your brand before your first client calls

Clients will look you up. A professional bio, a simple website and a Google Business Profile go a long way. Our free agent bio generator and first-year cost calculator can help you plan it.

The one new agents most often miss: If you were licensed from November 1, 2025 onward, you skip the 2026 renewal. Your first deadline is April 30, 2028, and the full 45 post-license hours are due by then.
