Just licensed in Ohio? Your first steps as a new salesperson

Congratulations on passing. Here is what Ohio expects from you next, checked against the state's own rules.

In Ohio your entry-level license is called a salesperson license, issued by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing. These are the deadlines and rules that matter in your first months.

Your first steps in Ohio

1

Get active under a broker

You must be sponsored by an Ohio broker, and your license is held by that broker.

2

Put your post-licensing deadline in your calendar today

20 hours of post-licensing education, with proof filed within 12 months of your license being issued. If you miss it, your license is suspended automatically and your broker is notified. If proof is not filed within 12 months after the suspension, the license is revoked.

3

Plan your first renewal

Three years after licensing: 30 hours of continuing education are due on or before your birthday three years after you were first licensed.

4

Sort out insurance, MLS and association membership

E&O insurance: Not required by the state rules we checked. Many brokerages require it or include it in their fees, so ask yours before you sign. Joining the local Realtor association and MLS is usually through your brokerage and comes with its own fees, so budget for them before your first deal.

5

Set up your brand before your first client calls

Clients will look you up. A professional bio, a simple website and a Google Business Profile go a long way. Our free agent bio generator and first-year cost calculator can help you plan it.

The one new agents most often miss: Ohio's post-licensing deadline is only 12 months, and missing it suspends the license automatically, with your broker told.
